Welcome to LIA-Sudan!
Likely, by now, you’ve heard about civil war in Sudan, and in Darfur in particular – the western region of Sudan where the pro-Arab government has attacked black Africans and been accused of committing acts of genocide.
The Save Darfur Coalition, in particular, has worked to raise the world’s awareness of these atrocities, which began in earnest in Darfur in 2003. During the 20 years prior, civil war raged between the north and south in Sudan. It’s estimated that this violence has led to more than 2 million deaths and the displacement of more then 4 million people.
What you may not have heard, though, is that Sudan has the seventeenth fastest growing economy in the world, and oil is Sudan’s main export.
Still, the vast majority of Sudan’s workforce remain agrarian, and any increase in wealth isn’t being widely shared. Up to three-fourths of all people in the rural north and 90 percent of rural residents in the south live below the poverty line. And one in every eight people in Sudan is an internally displaced person (IDP).
Sudan is the largest country in Africa. This sparsely populated nation of 39 million is comprised of almost 600 tribes, and the majorethnic groups – Arab Muslims in the north and black Christians and animists in the south – remain deeply divided. Once administered as a British colony, Sudan has now adopted Islamic legal code at the national level.
